This drawing was done on highly textured paper, which makes the graphite marks seem to dissolve when you look closely, but comes together as a detailed drawing when you stand back, echoing the juxtaposing feelings I sensed when I was in the presence of the bighorn sheep. I could have absolutely no idea what it was like to be those animals. Yet his drawing and woodcut manifest the curiosity about nature that was growing. It’s a difficult feeling to describe – their eyes were eyes similar to mine, and yet those eyes were completely impenetrable. Albrecht Durer The Rhinoceros (1515) The Rhinoceros by Albrecht Durer. We crossed paths with a family of bighorn sheep, and I was struck by the animals’ solid presence right there in front of me, and at the same time the feeling of my life being so vastly far removed from their lives. This drawing was inspired by a hike up Mount Washburn in Yellowstone National Park.
